Awesome!
I think its good that the company listened to their fans and the amount of outrage at this.
Everything I say comes from watching HD and husky or gold league play. Dont kill me if its wrong!

I doubt it. It pissed a lot of people off and even made a lot of WoW players cancel their subscriptions. And for what? Bad press? This isn't like some Hollywood actor who just wants the attention of the public. It was a serious blunder on Blizzard's part. |

I'm gald the RealID thing is optional now, but I really don't think they did it for the fans (as much as I'd love to think that Blizzard cares more about their fans than they do about money...well, I don't think that's true anymore- the Blizz we once knew is dead).
I'm not sure if you guys missed it or whatever, but Bashiok (a Blizz employee, popular in the forums) released his real name to prove that RealIDs were harmless; within minutes information about his life, his family, etc. was released, prank calls were made all day and massive orders of pizza were made under his name. Same thing happened with Bobby Kotick, people found his a bunch of his personal information, including his kids' favorite careals. Pretty sure this is why they changed it. EDIT: My bad, forgot my source http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2010/07/13/esrb-leaks-addresses-of-realid-complainants/ |

For me Real ID is one gate way for stalking and harassed by others. Its fine with me if there’s a option where they can strict the privacy control on user’s information whether users choose to post name or make a scree name. Besides screen name like SassyGenius or wow gold are used to put a barrier to maintaining a separation between private life, public life, and work life.

@ Deth-Con
Why is it sad that people want to remain anonymous? With cases of people murderring others over a game, I'd like to keep my name hidden. Wouldn't you? IT'S A DRAFF! |

lmao wow, they care that much about being known as "Lord Arkenine VII" instead of "Edward Sticknipples" that they cancel their subscription? XD! Oh well, I knew this whole privacy thing was going to become an issue. There's a lot of paranoid people on there and there are also a lot of creeps that would harass someone who showed up as "Emily Johnson". I got the message. Looks like I'm going bye-bye ![]() |

It wouldn't have been such a big deal if they gave us a choice to choose whether we want our names displayed(not that we would of made fake names as retaliations) instead it was a ultimatum to a good number of people hence the outrage.

Personally, I applaud Blizzard on this idea. I doubt trolls were the main driving force behind the Real ID on forums, but, it would have really made people a lot more civil on the forums, which, a lot of people quitting WoW over just puzzles me.
The forums are a privilage, yeah, you have to have a WoW account, or soon, Starcraft 2 one to post on them, but I stopped posting a long time ago on them because of the amount of total bull!@#$ on them, no matter how well written a post is, you always have a bunch of posters that reply with totally stupid stuff either not related to the topic, or meant to insult other posters who would be helpful, something along the lines of "ZOMG, YUS A STUPID NOOB, BLAH BLAH BLAH" and they do this almost completely because the fact that there are basically no consequences to their actions. I think if Blizzard had gone through with this, it surely would have been groundbreaking as far as forums go, and they would've have really come through in their goal of cleaning up the forums. I really doubt that Blizzard had just thrown this idea out at the drop of a hat, without thinking of the negitive, but were just far too overwhelmed by people who couldn't see the good points in it, which is cleaning up people's behaivor on the forums. Woman don't want to let players know that they play because, face it, when WoW players find out there is a girl playing, they flock to her like she's the only one out there, I think if Real ID did get implimented, it wouldn't be such a big deal to find out you're playing the game with a girl gamer, because it would be revealed that there are a lot more then you'd think, and we would get to the point where it's like "oh, a girl's in the guild, no biggie, there's millions that play this game". As for the people that think it's going to affect their job if the employers find out that they play WoW, that puzzled me, the only thing I can think of is that if the employer decided on a whim to look on WoW forums for their employee (which, if an employer even cares to look on wow forums for an employee, and happens to find the john doe that works for him among the many others out there) if you're posting really stupidly written, or racist comments, after Real ID goes live, yeah, it might cause an issue, but if you're not, why would he even care. And lastly, stalkers. What is a stalker really going to get from your name on the forums that they can't out of a phone book, all they can know is that Jane Doe plays warcraft, not where she lives, her credit card info, address, etc. If they can do the google search for all that info, what's the difference between finding your name in a phone book, or on the wow forums? I just think it was kind of disappointing that Blizzard had to retract this idea, because I would have really liked to see how it would have turned out, and it probably would have inspired me to post on the forums again, and engage in a more sophisticated forum environment rather than the drivel that has become of the WoW forums. Even if after it went live, they ended up having to scrap it afterwards, I can't think of a better social experiment than this would have been. |

I hate RealIDs. Why? Not only that I don't want some of the people I know/work with know that I am playing SC, but also because I want the right to smurf.
I don't want the whole world to know when I am just testing stuff on my smurf. (BTW my current ID is a failed smurf. ^^ I couldn't resist using the new forum feature by Gearvosh. Also, I was talking about smurfing in the final version.) EDIT: Also, Battle.net forums are the biggest, smelliest puss-filled troll den filled with flamers and password stealing wowbots. |
