Serriously, i've been wondering about this since the day I played starcraft.
If they don't eat, then wtf are the mouths for?
Except defilers, they eat zerglings.

I sorta agree, i mean all their teeth are sharp, which means carnivores.
Then again they could eat the minerals and well, drink the gas?
It's not perfect.

Well, not that Defiler only eats Zerglings, it actually can eat any kinds of Zerg to fuel the so-called metasynaptic processes that generate the biochemicals. A typical example of cannibalism isn't it? So Zerg can eat other Zerg in some cases.

I was actually wondering about that as well as the zerg don't strike me as the type to plan for sustainable consumption, more like eat up all the resources on a planet and move on to another like a nightmare swarm of parasites.

If they do eat the recourses, How do they eat it?
I mean minerals are pretty hard, they make battle crusiers out of it, and gas, you know why.

I thought they survive off of nutrients from creep. I mean thats what supports zerg buildings... so why wouldnt it work that way for the lings and lisks too?

So they sit there for an hour and let their skin absorb the nutrients?
I wonder what the mouths are for.

There mouths are probably for making the grunting noises. Zerg without mouths wouldn't look as scary as they do now with those sharp teeth.

I'm guessing their mouths are "all for the better to rip your face off"

They're evolved for war. Those mouths and those teeth are for nothing but what carnivores usually use them for for taking prey down. Tearing flesh, biting and killing.
All their nutrition comes from the Creep.

I bet the Hatchery, being the starting central point for creep production, has it in it's DNA structure a method for processing gas and minerals to produce proteins, hydrocarbons and other critical molecules and (as mentioned above) dispenses it through the creep with the creep probably having it's own veins and such for transporting it to units on the creep and it being received through the skin of the Zerg on the creep. Prior to hatching a Zerg unit, such resources would obviously be received through the egg from the creep.

As for their teeth and claws and such, the Overmind probably wasn't interested in self serving biological functions such as hunting and eating as it was with utilitarian purposes of destruction. To that end, I bet all Zerg lifeforms are super efficient and produce no waste from the nutrients gained. Perhaps it even makes it's own water.

I don't know of any lifeform that could make water from oxygen and hydrocarbons, but this is an alien race made by super aliens. Zerg could probably process radiant energy as well like we how use UV radiation to produce vitamin D.

i remember this one

"Zerg use minerals to harden their carapace and use gas as an energy source for their extremely high metabolism."

i think i read that on some blizzard made website so its probably official.
You read this because it was red.
