The SC2 Galaxy Map Editor Recap | Sep 3rd 2009, 20:47 | |
|
I will update this the more I learn about the editor. Map editor brainstorming is my favorite thing to do here. Take a look at my signature. The editor can do anything.*
*= restrictions apply ^^' Anyway, here are the features for the map editor: Have access to any unit from the Starcraft universe, and create your own. -The editor will have every unit (original, scrapped, new, easter-egg) featured. -The map editor will have a function that let's you add onto units and structures. Edit any stat, attack, or spell in the book. -You control how fast units go, how much damage they deal, what attacks they use, or what spells they use. -You are allowed to change whatever else you feel like changing about units, including hit points, shields, or armor. -Give spells no cool down time or cost no energy (blink). Up to 10 available slots to add actions to units. -The sections in the bottom right allow you to cast spells, attack, etc. You will be allowed to add whatever spell down there that you wish. -Give your structures the ability to build all units or cast spells. -Give any unit abilities like transport, or burrow. Mix and match each race. -Give Marines Psi Blades. -Give Zealots Burrow. -Provide Zerglings with a ranged attack. Create your own first/third person shooter. -Use any unit from the game and become that unit. -Use spells, and face against enemy units. -Start out as an RTS (UMS) map, and then take it down to FPS to carry out a specific task. Go beyond SC1 with triggers. -Unlimited possibilities with the combinations of conditions and actions. -Have the the computer respond with an action by typing. Combine Terrain types together. -Have one side of a map be filled with Skyscrapers, and the other side as Badlands. -Have a luscious jungle end in a dust bowl desert. - l3lack l)eath |

Just seeing this compiled leaves me with an absolutely awe struck impression of how amazing UMS games are going to be. The sky is going to be the limit, and i forsee that the game itself will transform from a linear platform to a nonlinear one in which the game is nearly what you make it.
I'm beyond stoked. |

Great compilation, MEDAVAS!
Leaves me wondering what happens if they implement Amphibious/Water units, having boats rise along with the Lava... could create some cool maps. -Psi

don't forget about 3rd person shooter mode, dynamic weather and lighting, customizable water, and a new, easier to use terrain editor, different from wc3

There WILL be carnage!!!!
But seriously, just the mouse-look and the mouse-aim has me stoked. This has the possibility of turning SC2 into the most customizable and balanced multiplayer third person shooter on the planet - and it's not even a TPS game. |

The one thing I would like to know is if the engine will support jumping, gravity and kinetics. So far we have not seen any of that.
There are just so many mods depending on whether this was included. |

Some of those arent possible. Like giving a marine psi blades, the psi blades are part of the zealot model, not a single weapon model. Also you cant "create" your own unit, unless you have modeling experience. Unless you mean just create a new unit based on an existing model, then thats fine.

Are we able to create our own Star Map in map editor in order to navigate the missions we have? I'm not sure if Star Map would be an independent model in SC2 or just a part of single player campaign in which already integrated.

I remember seeing on a Karune batch or someplace else that there was a feature that let you create your own units. If it's just combining units together is what it is, then this is what I had in mind (taking the Marine with Psi Blades to example): Class: (Standing, on 4s, etc.) not sure how they would classify each units. Head: Marine Torso: Marine Left Arm: Marine Right Arm: Marine Left Hand: Zealot Right Hand: Zealot/Marine? Left Leg: Marine Right Leg: Marine Left Foot: Marine Right Foot: Marine There would be a window that would pop up and shows you your current custom model that lets you take an image from any model in the units shape. You would just have to select the unit name under the body part and it would take it from that image. The class is what shape of unit your using (Marine, Zealot, Hydralisk) or (Viking with Mutalisk wings or something). Where I put Zealot/Marine? on the right hand would be where I would start combining the types of attacks because there would be the rifle in the right hand and the Psi Blade in the other. Thoughts on this? |

Yeah, I remember hearing the 'Galaxy' Map Editor somewhere, what's wrong with that? |

@Medavas - Your whole idea of how unit creation is going to be is completely wrong. You do not know the first thing about how 3d models and animations work.
You cant take pieces of an existent model and attach it to another, the original model has a model skeleton which all animations and textures are based off of. The most you can do is place 1 full model on top of another full model, ala, the Uberlisk (Ultraliks + Spire crawlers on top of it). |

Aww, that sucks never mind then
. And the skeleton thing is what I meant by class but oh well. Well I guess I'll learn how to model then. Will there be a program that comes with the game that can do this?

You can attach pieces of models together in the warcraft 3 editor. For example
![]() You do need to import a model of whatever you are attaching, but you don't need to make a whole new model. This of course doesn't mean you will be able to do it in the SC2 editor. |

Lol no it will not. You would need 3Dmax or Maya, and even then you wont be able to. You must take classes for 3d modeling and animation, unless by chance you are just good and can figure it out. On top of modeling it you will need to apply UV maps and textures, then apply animations. Just forget about ever doing custom models cause it rarely will happen. |
