Recently, Blizzard announced a decision to make RealID mandatory for posting on the official Battle.net forums. However, the decision received much negative criticism from the gaming community in general, even prompting many of their World of WarCraft subscribers to cancel their accounts.

In response to this, Mike Morhaime made a public announcement through the Blizzard moderator Nethaera on the World of WarCraft forums that Blizzard decided to reverse the decision and stick to Battle.net/World of WarCraft character names for use on the official Battle.net forums. However, for those that want it, RealID will still remain an option.

Hello everyone,

I'd like to take some time to speak with all of you regarding our desire to make the Blizzard forums a better place for players to discuss our games. We've been constantly monitoring the feedback you've given us, as well as internally discussing your concerns about the use of real names on our forums. As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.

It's important to note that we still remain committed to improving our forums. Our efforts are driven 100% by the desire to find ways to make our community areas more welcoming for players and encourage more constructive conversations about our games. We will still move forward with new forum features such as conversation threading, the ability to rate posts up or down, improved search functionality, and more. However, when we launch the new StarCraft II forums that include these new features, you will be posting by your StarCraft II Battle.net character name + character code, not your real name. The upgraded World of Warcraft forums with these new features will launch close to the release of Cataclysm, and also will not require your real name.

I want to make sure it's clear that our plans for the forums are completely separate from our plans for the optional in-game Real ID system now live with World of Warcraft and launching soon with StarCraft II. We believe that the powerful communications functionality enabled by Real ID, such as cross-game and cross-realm chat, make Battle.net a great place for players to stay connected to real-life friends and family while playing Blizzard games. And of course, you'll still be able to keep your relationships at the anonymous, character level if you so choose when you communicate with other players in game. Over time, we will continue to evolve Real ID on Battle.net to add new and exciting functionality within our games for players who decide to use the feature.

In closing, I want to point out that our connection with our community has always been and will always be extremely important to us. We strongly believe that Every Voice Matters, ( http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/about/mission.html ) and we feel fortunate to have a community that cares so passionately about our games. We will always appreciate the feedback and support of our players, which has been a key to Blizzard's success from the beginning.

Just let it be known, that I love the idea of Real ID. And I love what it means for gaming in general. Its just I feel they are ahead of the times, gaming really isnt considered cool, or good yet. Employers and just people in general dont respect gamers in western culture as of yet, especially the hardcore genre that RTS is. And its hard to move something forward when in reality the industry just isnt ready for it.

I would love for this to be implemented in the future, just when the culture has changed, and there are more laws, and monitoring and protecting the online user. But as of now, the world just isnt ready for it. Thank you blizzard.

I'm with Death-Con above me; I was all for it and thought that it would improve the quality of the forums. I really wanted to see how it worked out as I tend to think that age of separate online and real life identities is drawing to a close whether people want it to or not. But it looks like that will occur another day.

Well I am pretty sure it would have crashed and burned and probably woulda messed with blizzards stock. Simple as simple is, they were just trying to push something the people arent ready for. Which is quite sad really.

Surprised they are so quick to cancel this, thought that it would d have taken longer. This was the most likely outcome given the fan rage, and should not be too surprising as too he end. I was mostly neutral on this so no big deal one way or the other.

Notice it's the blizzard CEO... I can't imagine Activison caring enough about our security to send us a letter...

Wow that guy was retarded. When he said no games ever go past 10 minutes, the game was 11 minutes in.

Well Activision weren't the ones that pushed the ID through it was Blizzard so why would Activision apologize for doing nothing wrong?

I'm saying that this kind of immediate response to calm the fans is something that I would have a hard time imagining Activision doing.

Eg.If Activison did the same thing, I doubt they would revoke it.

Absolutely fantastic, but not at all surprising. That feature had 10x the criticism of B.net 2.0. I mean, did anyone have a doubt it would be canceled?
