I have a zergling ablity idea. What if at tier three you could research the ability for zerglings to scale cliffs. This would make them way more useful in the endgame, when they can be contained easily by air units and aoe units. So its ugrades would be speed boast teir one, attack speed boast tier two, and cliff climbing tier three.

There were many treads with the same idea and conclusion of all of them is simple: NO, Lings being able to climb cliffs are op. Terran/Toss cliff climbing units are extremely specialized, not spammable special stuff. Ling is easist to spam unit in entire game...

On principle, this sounds like an awesome idea; the thought of thousands of Zerglings storming a command center gives me chills at just the thought of it. But that's just it. As Arthanis once said,
Lings being able to climb cliffs are op
Spamming thousands of Zerglings would be a lot easier and far more deadly, even late game, than a few handfuls of Reapers or Collosi. To the best of my knowledge, neither of which are in the direct tech tree, correct?

Also, what Gemini_19 said.

I said it in the Zergling Vigor thread and I will say it here. An effective massable unit such as the Zergling should not be able to cliff jump. The Reaper is highly specialized and it would be very difficult to destroy a base with just Reapers. The Stalker's Blink ability has a cool-down that makes it unlikely for them to be used for raiding. 15 to 20 Cracklings being able to bypass primary base defenses would be way too strong, even with their slower speed off creep. I know that Overlords can carry them, but three Overlords are easier to deal with than 20 Zerglings.

I think people give too much credit of how powerful Zerglings would be if they could climb cliffs. Regardless, I don't like the idea of Zerglings climbing cliffs (or burrowing under cliffs like others have suggested.) The gameplay of doing so just wouldn't feel very Zergish to separate your Zerglings from your Roaches/Hydras/Ultras. Zerg should stick together in a single swarm (even if it's not always played this way *points at Mutalisk harassment*). They shouldn't separate.

@Azkit
People are right when they tell you Cracklings which are capable of going up and down cliffs are a tiny bit (which means; totally 100% are) op. Think of it. In SC BW I was able to destroy 3 AI bases with just around 30-40 Cracklings and some Ultras to use them as meatshields. The real damagedealers here are the Cracklings.
Like everyone else said: bad idea. Maybe something for a mod in the future, but that also means the Zergling isn't going to be the only modified unit. You will have a bad-ass hard time dealing with Cracklings that come in groups of 10 over the cliffs. Remember, only when they jump down you can see them.

Yeah,

The principle behind the idea is sound. "Give zerglings something that gives them flexibility late game" but in all honesty that flexibility already comes in the form of using other units. Zerglings absolutely tear things up once they get their two upgrades. Give them a third and it would force opponents to basically wall their bases off.

Three dozen cracklings would just eat **** alive, and for what cost? Like 900 minerals? /shudder

Calculating: Three dozen equals 36, divide by 2 (2 per egg) is 18 -> *50 is 900.
God damn dude o.O you're right... Now keep in mind that the last game I played I had somewhere around the 3500 minerals left... i know bad macro, need to work on that, but still! 3500/900= 3.8 That time 36 is 140 Cracklings!!!
Now that's a GG O_O

lol when I saw this topic so many times, my only thing is if people want to make it like an upgrade, the only way to balance it is to make it an INDIVIDUAL upgrade! like the baneling, its a morph and its quite expensive like the baneling..my proposal was about 100 minerals/50 gas for every ling to upgrade..yeah..fucking expensive..plus with no original speed out on the open terrain, I know lings get ****ed up pretty badly lol

I'm surprised that you have yet to notice that this idea has been passed around on at least a half dozen threads. The answer has been: no. Reason for it? Blizzard doesn't want zerglings to be up to par with the marine's new tank 20 hp and the zealot's hydralisk killing charge.

So really late in the game, when it's just my Chargelots, Stalkers, and High Templars left, I ran across something even scarier than Death-Con's social life. Battlecruisers.

The Zerg do not need a cliff-scaling unit. In fact, that's one of the big things that seperates them from the other 2.

?..but it kind of makes you think that even though the Zerg is the most evolutionized race, it doesnt have cliff hopping units...eh
